WHAT IS PILES?
Piles are the swollen or dilated veins of the lower anus and rectum. These are like varicose veins. The swollen veins lead to inflammation of the surrounding tissues. They can also cause growth of the tissue around the anus. The size and location of the growths vary. Piles have become very common now-a-days but the exact cause is unknown. There are various treatment options available but the symptoms can be some of the dietary and lifestyle changes.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF PILES?
The exact reason of piles is unknown. However, it is believed to be due to stretching of veins around the anus under pressure. It is developed from increased pressure in the lower rectum due to the following causes:
- Sitting for long periods of time
- Straining during bowel movements
- Chronic constipation
- Obesity
- Eating low-fiber diet
- Heavy weight lifting
- Pregnancy

HOME REMEDIES FOR THE TREATMENT OF PILES
Here are some of the home remedies which can be done at home for the management of piles:
1. WITCH HAZEL
Witch hazel is a wonder plant which has been used since times immemorial for treating various skin disorders. It has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces pain and itching around the anus. Apply witch hazel directly to the affected part.
2. WARM BATH WITH EPSOM SALT
A warm bath for 15-20 minutes is very beneficial for curing inflammation related to piles. One should take sitz bath after a bowel movement. Add Epsom salt in warm water for good results. It helps in soothing and relaxing of anal muscles.
3. CASTOR OIL
Castor oil has antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It has amazing potential to reduce the size of the piles and thus relieving pain. It can be either taken orally or can be applied locally.
4. TEA TREE OIL
It is an excellent home remedy for itching and skin inflammation. It has antimicrobial properties, thus reduces inflammation of the concerned area. Apply the oil by mixing it with coconut or olive oil.
5. COCONUT OIL
Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer. Apply it regularly on the affected part. It helps in reducing swelling and inflammation in the area. It decreases itching also.
6. ICE PACKS
Apply ice pack on the concerned area for 10-15 minutes. It reduces pain and inflammation in anus. It helps in numbness of pain. One should not apply ice directly to the area. It should be wrapped in towel to avoid damage to the skin.
7. ALOE VERA
Aloe vera is having anti-inflammatory properties. It helps in healing wounds. It gives relief from itching, burning and pain caused due to piles. One should apply it regularly on anus for good results.
