OCD AND ITS AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic disorder in which the patient has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and / or behaviors (compulsions) that the patient feels the need to do and repeat. It reveals a pattern of unwanted thoughts and fears leading to repetitive behaviors which tend to interfere with daily activities.
It you try to ignore it, it only increases your stress and the bothersome urges try to come back heading you into a vicious cycle of OCD
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OCD
People who have OCD face issues in all aspects of their lives due to these obsessions and compulsions.
Symptoms of Obsession:
These unwanted thoughts are repeated and persistent which cause distress and anxiety due to resultant urges. These obsessions are intrusive in nature and often have themes to them like:
- Fear of getting dirt on oneself
- Having doubts or fears about uncertainty
- Needing things in an orderly or symmetrical manner
- Aggressive or horrific thoughts about loosing control over oneself and harming others.
- Unwanted thoughts on aggression, sexual or religious subjects.
Examples of obsessive behavior include:
- Fear of being contaminated by touching something
- Doubts that stove is on or door is locked
- Intense stress when objects aren’t placed orderly
- Images of driving your car into crowd.
- Thoughts about shouting obscenities or acting inappropriately infront of people.
- Unpleasant sexual imagery.
Symptoms of compulsion:
These are repetitive acts that a person feels driven to perform so as to reduce anxiety or try to stop something bad from happening. However, when one engages in these compulsions there is no pleasure and only a temporary relief is achieved.
People often form rituals or rules to help control your anxiety when you they are having obsessive thoughts but these are not realistically related to the problem often.
Some typical themes are:
- Cleaning
- Checking
- Counting
- Order
- Routine
- Reassurance demand
Examples of compulsion signs and symptoms include:
- Washing hands until skin becomes raw in nature
- Checking locks repeatedly
- Checking stove again and again.
- Counting in a certain way
- Silently repeating something
- Arranging stuff to face a certain way.
Usually it begins in young adults or early teenage but, may start in childhood also. Obsessions and compulsions also change over time. OCD, is a lifelong disorder and severity highly varies.
CAUSES
The cause although isn’t fully understood but some of the theories are:
- Changes that occur in one’s own body or brain function
- There may be a genetic component.
- These behaviors can be learned from family members gradually.
HOW AYURVEDA HELPS IN OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER
OCD in ayurveda is associated with atatvaabhinivesha where atava means something that doesn’t exist and abhinivesh refers to the stubborn nature. In ayurveda focus is on removal of toxins from body and restoring the healthy body functioning.
