Pulmonary hypertension refers to the high blood pressure in pulmonary arteries. One of its form is called pulmonary arterial hypertension where blood vessels are narrowed or destroyed. This damage slows the blood flow towards the lungs thus increasing the pressure in the arteries. This results in extra effort from heart muscles which eventually cause them to weaken.
In some people, pulmonary hypertension worsens with time and can be fatal although not necessarily curable but treatment helps reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
Pulmonary hypertension can cause anemia, arrhythmias, pericardial effusion and clots. It is also dangerous as can lead to complications for both mother and child. Without the treatment it can be overtaxing and force heart to work harder. The right ventricle is responsible for pumping blood to the lungs so over the time PH causes right ventricle to get bigger and thus leading to right ventricular hypertrophy which can lead to right sided heart failure. This has a ripple effect in the body and harms the normal body functions.
SYMPTOMS OF PULMONARY HYPERTENSION
