OVERVIEW
Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory condition of the spinal vertebrae. It is a form of arthritis which causes lower back pain. The bones in spinal column may fuse together. The fusion of the bones makes the spine rigid and stiff, sometimes leading to a hunched posture. The ribs can also be affected, involving other body parts also. Males are more commonly affected than females. However, there is no permanent cure of ankylosing spondylitis but a balanced diet and physical exercise can be very helpful in managing the symptoms of the disease.
CAUSES OF ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS
The exact reason for the cause of ankylosing spondylitis is not known. But it is believed to be due to the inheritance of a mutated gene which produces a protein called HLA-B27. This leads to manifestation on ankylosing spondylitis disease.
RISK FACTORS OF ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS
The factors which make a person more prone to developing ankylosing spondylitis are:
- Men are more commonly affected than women
- It often starts either in the teenage or young adulthood
- Weak immune system
- Ulcerative colitis
- Psoriasis
- Crohn’s disease
SYMPTOMS OF ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS
The common signs and symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis are:
- Pain and stiffness in neck
- Lower backache
- Stiffness in back
- Difficulty in breathing
- Loss of appetite
- Feeling tired
- Pain in hip joint
- Abdominal pain
- Watery stools
- Rashes on skin

COMPLICATIONS OF ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS
The complications which arise with ankylosing spondylitis are:
- Fracture of the vertebrae due to compression
- Inflammation of the eyes
- Inflammation of aorta
- Dysunctioning of aortic valve
- Weakening of bones
- Kyphosis
- Irregular heartbeat
DIAGNOSIS OF ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS
The doctor will do a thorough physical examination of the patient. He will see the range of motion of spine and look for stiffness in the areas. He will ask about the symptoms and will take family history of the patient also. He will make the patient do the following tests:
