What does it mean ?
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that proves to be life threatening which is characterized by starving oneself and excessive weight loss. In actual terms Anorexia means “loss of appetite”. People suffering from anorexia nervosa kill their appetite despite being hungry. People with anorexia have intense fear of gaining weight and have distorted perception of their body weight and shape or having unrealistic body image. Nutritional deficiencies occur as a result of dietary restrictions. Sometimes people get into this when they try to cope with emotional problems. Mostly this disorder hits teenagers or early adulthood. Anorexia nervosa mostly occurs in females but can affect people of any gender.
Causes:
- Genetics and hormones
- Pressure from environment and social media
- Person with obsessive compulsive disorder
- Emotional trauma
What does Ayurveda say about Anorexia Nervosa?
“Aruchi” is a word used to describe Anorexia. It occurs due to the aggravation of all three sharirik doshas (body elements). Along with this psychological factors contributing to this such as anger, stress, anxiety. All of these factors lead to incomplete digestion and accumulation of ama (toxins) inside the stomach. Hence vitiating the whole body.
Physical symptoms due to lack of nutrition:
- Severe loss of muscle mass
- Low blood pressure
- Fatigue or exhaustion
- Cold hand and feet (hypothermia)
- Dehydration
- Bloating
- Hair Loss
- Insomnia
- Dry skin, brittle nails
- Decrease bone density (more prone to fractures)

- Eat 2-3 oranges a day
- Eat an apple a day
- Boil garlic cloves (2-3) in a cup of water, add a teaspoon of lemon juice and drink twice a day
- Paste of fresh ginger, with a pinch of salt and lemon juice (half teaspoon) and have twice a day
- Buttermilk with salt and black pepper
