OVERVIEW
Bronchitis is a respiratory disorder which is characterized by the inflammation of the bronchi and the bronchial tubes present in the lungs. These are the airways which carry air to and from the lungs. There occurs inflammation and swelling inside the tubules leading to formation of excess mucus. It often starts from a common cold or other respiratory infection.
Bronchitis is of two types-acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis is more prevalent than chronic bronchitis. It is also known as chest cold. It lasts from about a week to 10 days. Chronic bronchitis is the long term inflammation of the bronchial tubes. It often occurs because of the smoking. It comes under chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Saying no to smoking can help in prevention of bronchitis.
CAUSES OF BRONCHITIS
The causes by which a person contracts bronchitis are:
- Viral infection
- Bacterial infection
- Cigarette smoking
- Air pollution
- Dust
- Exposure to toxic gases
- Tobacco inhalation
- Suffering from asthma
- Having a genetic predisposition to bronchitis
- Weak immune system
- Having gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Suffering from autoimmune disorders
SYMPTOMS OF BRONCHITIS
The symptoms of acute bronchitis last for just a few days. However, chronic bronchitis is long-lasting and causes more damage to the lungs. Some of the common signs and symptoms of bronchitis are:
- Cough
- Production of excess mucus
- Mucus can be clear, white or yellowish-gray in color
- Feeling tired
- Difficulty in breathing
- Fever and chills
- Chest heaviness
- Insomnia
- Presence of blood in mucus
- Running nose
- Sore throat
- Wheezing
- Body aches
PREVENTION OF BRONCHITIS
Following are the steps which are very useful for the prevention of bronchitis:
- Getting a flu vaccination
- Avoid cigarette smoking
- Washing hands regularly
- Wearing a surgical mask, especially during traveling
DIAGNOSIS OF BRONCHITIS
The doctor will ask about the symptoms of the disease to the patient. He will do chest examination and look for signs of chest congestion. He will make the patient do some of the following tests:
- Chest X-ray
- Complete blood count
- Sputum tests
- Pulmonary function tests

Here are some of the medications of Chandigarh Ayurved center which are used for the treatment of bronchitis:
1. Broncho care syrup
Broncho care syrup is used to eliminate chronic cough, bronchitis, common cold, whooping cough, etc. This ayurvedic syrup contains Vasa patra (Adhatoda vasica), Kantkari (Solanum surattense), Mulethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Bharangi (Clerodendrum serratum), Chitrakmool (Plumbago zeylanica), Sonth (Zingiber officinale), Pippali(Piper longum), Lasoda (Cordia dichotoma), Pudina (Mentha spicata), etc. These ingredients show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, bronchodilator properties.

3. Kapha Sachet
The powder contains a mixture of herbal ingredients which are mainly made for the treatment of asthma. Their properties generally balance the vata and kapha dosha. The sachet contains ingredients like – Sitopladi churna, Abhrak bhasma, Laxmi vilas ras, Godanti bhasma, etc. It is used mainly in chronic cough, whooping cough and trouble breathing. It also relieves congestion of chest, sore throat. The ingredients loosen the mucus accumulated in the chest thus making it easy to cough it out. Its main therapeutic effects appear on lungs, pleura, and airways.
Recommended Dosage– Take 1 Sachet twice a day with normal water.
4. Giloy capsule
Giloy capsules are formed with the standardized extract of herb giloy (Tinospora cordifolia). The Giloy herb improves immunity, removes toxins from body, purifies blood, beneficial in cough, cold, fever, & bronchitis.
Recommended Dosage:Take 2 capsules twice a day with normal water.
5. Trikatu Syrup
