CAN TUMOURS BE TREATED IN AYURVEDA

Tumor simply means an abnormal growth or mass of cells that grows gradually and cause illness.

In Ayurveda, Benign tumor is termed as Granthi and at the malignant stage it is termed as Arbuda.

According to Acharya Sushrut there is aggravation of the three Doshas i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha and may develop a malignant tumor or arbuda. This may affect the tissue, which might result in developing a malignant tumor.

Is tumor a Cancer?

The answer is No, it is not necessary that each tumor can be a Cancer.

At initial stage or Benign Tumour is Non- cancerous but malignant is cancerous.

TYPES OF TUMOUR-

There are 3 main types of tumor-

1. Benign– These are not cancerous. They do not spread or grow or grows very slowly.
2. Premalignant- In these tumors, the cells are not yet cancerous, but they have the potential to become malignant.
3. Malignant- Malignant tumors are cancerous.

CAUSES OF TUMOUR-

• Excessive intake of alcohol.
• Environmental Factors or toxins like certain poisonous mushrooms and  Alpha toxins or a type of poison that can grow on peanut plants
• Excessive exposure to sunlight.
• Genetic factors.
• Being Overweight or Obesity.
• Exposure to Radiation
• Viruses infection or inflammation
• Local Trauma or injury
• Diet and stress etc.

FEATURES OF TUMOUR-

• Round
• Firm
• Causing mild pain
• Large
• Deeply rooted in the body
• Growth is slow
• No suppuration is seen
• A swollen, fleshy growth

A malignant tumor contains an excess of Kapha and adipose tissue and it does not suppurate but forming inflexible little balls.

Acharya Sushruta explains the 6 types of tumors-

• Vatika Granthi
• Paitik Granthi
• Kaphaj Granthi
• Medoj Granthi
• Raktaj Arbuda
• Mamsa arbuda

First to Fourth is Benign and can be treated successfully at an early stage but 5th and 6th is Malignant.

DESCRIPTION OF TUMOURS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

Medas Granthi or Fatty tissue	Doshas affects the adipose tissue or fatty tissue	It is similar to the tumour caused by Kapha aggravation.  It is Fatty, soft, mobile. Increases or decreases in size with gain or loss of weight of the patient. Vata helps to transport the fat to the muscle tissue or skin.
