WHAT IS CELIAC DISEASE?
Celiac disease is also known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy or celiac sprue. It is a digestive autoimmune disorder that affects small intestine. It can affect different organs along with organs of digestive system. In this disease, the body starts over-reacting towards a protein called gluten. Gluten is easily found in wheat, barley and rye. This leads to damage of small intestine. Diarrhea, bloating, gas, anemia and weight loss are some of the most common symptoms of celiac disease. When children are affected, their growth and development gets hampered as the nutrients from food don’t get absorbed properly.
However, there is no permanent cure of celiac disease but a gluten-free diet can help in management of symptoms and helps in intestinal healing.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF CELIAC DISEASE?
The immune system of the body helps in protecting the body from the invasion of foreign micro-organisms. But in celiac disease, there gets abnormality in the functioning of the immune system. Gluten is a protein which is widely available in wheat, barley, etc. When it enters the body through food, the immune system considers it as a harmful agent. It starts attacking the lining of the small intestine. Villi are the small projections present on the lining of small intestine. They help in absorption of nutrients from food.
