WHAT IS MIGRAINE?
Migraine is a medical condition which is associated with severe throbbing pain in head. The pain usually occurs in one side of the head. The pain is often associated with nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light. These are the aura symptoms which occur with or before a migraine attack. The attack can last for a few hours to a few days. Sometimes the pain is so severe that it interferes with the daily activities of an individual.
The intensity, severity, symptoms and frequency of migraine vary from person to person. In some persons, migraine occurs once in a week while in others, it occurs occasionally. There are various types of medications available for its treatment. However, some of the home remedies, dietary and lifestyle changes are also very helpful.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF MIGRAINE?
The exact cause of occurrence of migraine is not known. But it is believed to be due to abnormal brain activity which leads to release of harmful chemicals in brain. Migraine is triggered by the following factors:
- Extremes of weather
- Bright lights
- Changes in atmospheric pressure
- Excessive stress
- Hormonal changes
- Pregnancy
- Menopause
- Loss of water from body
- Severe physical activity
- Noise pollution
- Abnormal sleeping patterns

- Shooting pain in one side of the head

Some of the home remedies can be very helpful in treating migraine:
ENOUGH SLEEP
- Very little sleep or too much sleep is one of the triggers of migraine. It also lowers the capacity to bear pain. So one should have 8 to 10 hours of good sleep each night, this refreshes the mind and body.
YOGA
- Regular yoga can be very helpful in managing the symptoms of migraine. It increases the blood supply to the concerned area and thus prevents migraine attack. As the pace of yoga is slower, it doesn’t trigger migraine.
CAFFEINE
- Caffeine is present in tea, coffee and some other beverages. Caffeine helps in absorption of migraine drugs faster. It gives mild relief from headache. However, it may lead to some of the withdrawal symptoms like fatigue, etc.
APPLICATION OF LAVENDER OIL
- Lavender oil can be either inhaled directly or diluted with a carrier oil. It is also applied in small amounts on temples of forehead. It helps in decreasing the intensity of migraine pain. It reduces the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.
AVOID CERTAIN TYPES OF FOOD
Diet is very important in managing the symptoms of migraine. Some of the foods and drinks can trigger migraine. The foods are:
