Understanding Bipolar Disorder:
Bipolar disorder is a behavioral disorder which is chronic in nature that causes intense shifts in behavior, mood, thinking patterns or energy levels of a person. It is also called as Manic-depressive illness. This shift in patterns lasts for hours, days, weeks or months. The changes in behavior might interfere with the day to day activities. There is significant fluctuation in mood experiencing hypomanic and depressive episodes. In between the episodes people also have a normal mood known as Euthymia.
In mania episodes bipolar people experience an irritable mood, extreme change in emotions, thoughts, talkativeness, energy and activity level. Mostly these behavioral changes are noticeable by others. People indulge in activity causing them social, physical or financial harm. People usually experience symptoms like delusion or hallucination.These extreme behaviors come under BIpolar 1 disorder.
Bipolar 2 is less severe from Mania and doesn’t interfere with daily functioning.
Depressive episodes are in between mania episodes. People experience low or depressed mood, loss of interest in activities and experience depression-like symptoms such as tiredness, loss of appetite, hopelessness, sadness, emotionally drained etc.
Sign and Symptoms:
- Restlessness
- Sudden, severe change in mood
- Aggressiveness
- Increased impulsiveness
- Poor judgment
- Increased sleep or less sleep
- Irritability
- Weight gain or weight loss

Behavioral disorder considered as “Unmaad” and bipolar disease particularly comes under “bhootonmada”. There are 18 types of Bhootonmaada. Bipolar disease show quite similar features with “Gandharv grahonmada” chracterised by:
- Teekshnam (anger, agressiveness, irritability)
- Saahasikam (risk taking agitation/increased psychomotor activity)
- Gambheera and Adhrushya (grandiosity /agitation)
- mukha vaadyaani kurvantam (dancing, singing and playing music)
- gandha ratim (flamboyant appearance / obsessive compulsive symptoms)
- Shringaara leelaabhiratim (hyper sexuality)
- Paana ratim (alcohol abuse)
- Svaachaaram (virtuous conduct)
- Chaaru chaalpa shabdam and alpa vyavahaaram (hypomania/mixed episode/mania with depressive symptoms)
