Understanding Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection a person might get from the bite of an infected tick. The bacteria causing Lyme disease is “Borrelia burgdorferi”. Bacteria spreads to humans through the infected tick bite. Specifically the tick that spreads infection is blacklegged ticks or deer ticks. When ticks bite the human the infection spread through bloodstream to various tissues in the body causing inflammation of various parts of the body. If Lyme disease is left untreated it turns into inflammatory condition that affects multiple systems of the body including skin, joints, nervous system and lastly spread to organs. Mostly in initial it gives flu like symptoms. Symptoms start from 3 to 30 days after the tick bite. But in some cases there is not any symptoms until month.
Signs and symptoms:
- Fever
- Chills
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Muscle and joint pain
- Rashes
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Unable to sleep
- Memory loss
- Confusion
- Arthritis
- Inflammation of brain and spinal cord
- Irregular heart beat
- Shooting pains, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet
Keynote: Rashes in Lyme disease looks like a Bull’s eye circles around the middle. The rash slowly gets bigger over many days around 2 to 12 inches. It is warm to touch and show up in any part of the body.
Stages of Lyme disease:
- Early localized Stage: During this flu like symptoms appears such as fever with chills, swollen lymph nodes, headache, sore throat, rash like bull’s eye etc.
- Early disseminated Stage: Flu like symptoms along with joint and muscle pain, numbness, weakness, palpitations, chest pain, facial palsy.
- Late disseminated Stage: This stage occurs after weeks, months or year after a tick bites. This shows symptoms like arthritis, sleeping trouble, confusion etc
Ayurveda approach for Lyme Disease:
According to ayurveda there is vitiation of all three doshas (body element) that are vata, pitta and kapha giving rise to symptoms accordingly. Aggravation of vata gives fever, chills, pain, nervous system symptoms, aggravation of pitta give rise to rashes etc. These doshas inturn vitiates Rakta Dhatu (blood).
Ayurveda approach while managing the Lyme Disease aimed at balancing all three doshas, rakta sodhana (purification of blood), detoxification process to eliminates the doshas. It is managed through eliminating the symptoms, preventing the complications and boosting up the immunity.
