Dengue is a disease which is caused by the bite of a female mosquito of the group Aedes aegypti. The disease is mostly prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. When an infected female mosquito bites, it transmits the dengue virus in the blood of the person. There are four subtypes of the dengue virus. It is not a contagious disease. The symptoms are usually flu-like but the severe form is life-threatening. The severe form is known as dengue hemorrhagic fever.
The treatment of dengue usually involves prevention. But when infected, increased amounts of fluid are given.
SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE
The symptoms of dengue appear after 4 to 6 days of infection. They last for near about 10 days. When symptoms are mild, they are flu-like and can be mistaken by having a viral infection. The common signs and symptoms of dengue are:
- Sudden onset of high fever
- Severe muscle and joint pain
- Extreme body weakness
- Feeling of fullness
- Pain behind the eyes
- Bleeding gums
- Skin rashes
- Difficulty in breathing
- Nose bleeding
- Abdominal pain
- Presence of blood in stools
- Liver enlargement
RISK FACTORS OF DENGUE
The person develops more risk of developing the disease due to the following factors:
- Living in tropical and subtropical areas such as Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America, etc
- Had a previous infection of dengue
COMPLICATIONS OF DENGUE
The complications which are associated with dengue are:
- Internal bleeding
- Damage to organs
- Sudden drop of blood pressure
- Premature birth
- Shock death
PREVENTION OF DENGUE
With some of the simple steps, dengue can be prevented:
- Wearing protective clothing
- Using mosquito repellant
- Avoid stagnation of water in coolers, flower pots or the surrounding areas
- Keeping the windows closed during evening
- Staying in air-conditioned houses
DIAGNOSIS OF DENGUE
The doctor will do a blood test and look for viral infection and count of platelets. He will look for signs and symptoms of the disease. He will ask the patient’s travel history to know whether he has come from tropical area.
