OVERVIEW
Dysmenorrhea is the sharp menstrual cramp which occurs in the lower abdomen before and during periods. Most of the women experience dysmenorrhea in their lifetime. Some ladies have a minor discomfort whereas others experience it so bad that their daily activities get affected. It is normally known as menstrual cramps. There are numerous causes of dysmenorrhea such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, etc. However, it occurs just because of increased uterine contractions and thus gets better with age and often stop after giving birth to a child.
The treatment of dysmenorrhea involves treatment of underlying cause of the disease. However, with good eating habits and regular physical exercise, it can be prevented.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DYSMENORRHEA?
The innermost lining of uterus is known as endometrium. This layer grows and sheds off during each menstrual cycle. This layer is expelled from the body with the help of uterine contractions. The uterus contracts due to the release of a chemical substance known as prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins are the hormone-like substances which are involved in pain and inflammation. Higher prostaglandin levels are involved in severe menstrual cramps.
Following are some of the causes which lead to dysmenorrhea:
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Adenomyosis
- Cervical stenosis
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS OF DYSMENORRHEA?
There are some factors which make a person more vulnerable to dysmenorrhea. Following are the risk factors of dysmenorrhea:
- Having menarche at an early age
- Below the age of 30 years
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Cigarette smoking
- Having a genetic predisposition to dysmenorrhea
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DYSMENORRHEA?
The common signs and symptoms of dysmenorrhea are:
- Sharp, stabbing pain which occurs in the lower abdomen
- Pain starts within one to three days before periods
- Dull and persistent discomfort
- Pain spreading to thighs and lower back
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loose stools
- Headache
- Dizziness
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS WHICH ARE ASSOCIATED WITH DYSMENORRHEA?
Normally, dysmenorrhea doesn’t cause other health issues but it can disrupt the day to day activities of a person. But there are some disorders which are related to menstrual cramps such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc. Endometriosis can lead to infertility. However, there can also occur scarring of tissue in fallopian tubes due to result of pelvic inflammatory disease. This can result in ectopic pregnancy.
HOW THE DIAGNOSIS OF DYSMENORRHEA IS MADE?
The doctor will ask about the signs and symptoms of the disease to the patient. He will do a physical examination for examining tenderness and swelling in abdomen. He will ask about the past medical history and family history of the patient. He will recommend some of the following tests to the patient for the evaluation of the disease:
